The first true piece of sports equipment that man invented was a ball. In ancient Egypt, as everywhere, throwing stones was a favorite childrens game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child. Lookinig for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptains made what were probably the first balls. At first , balls were made of grass or leaves held together by pieces of rope. Later they were made of pieces of animal skin which were joined together and were filled with feathers or dry grass. Even though the Egyptins were interested and skilled in fighting wars, they found time for peaceful games. Befor long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules.
